Problem solved! As suspected, his GPU (ATI Radeon HD 6630M) is closely related to the species of Intel HD 3000 (they are switchable to each other on his VAIO laptop). And there is an updated driver available. Once updated, it works like charm!

A friend of mine, also using Windows, seems to have similar problems. Sometimes the background is missing, and a mouth becomes disembodied. Do you think it's the same kind of graphic card's issue, Vit9696?

Oh, of course the voice is not the issue. I was just explaining the issue of singular or plural all depends on the object of the verb. If in this case the object is 虚実, and if we translate it as "truths and lies," then we need to use "they" instead of "it." 虚実 is tricky...

The Japanese original is in active voice, with the topicalization of the objects:
"The artful truths and lies -- without love, you can't see“ = "Without love, you can't see the artful truths and lies."

Mammon's furniture that is me strikes again: any chance to provide the Japanese original text as well? One-key switch back and forth would be marvelous! Definitely will help improve my shabby Japanese. I know it's not the first priority but a possibility to wait for would be a great blessing please
